Causes Of Alcohol Allergy

Alcohol intolerance occurs when your body does not have the right enzymes to break down (metabolize) the toxins in alcohol. This is caused by hereditary traits (genetic).

Intolerance reactions can also be caused by a variety of other ingredients commonly found in alcoholic beverages, especially beer or wine. These include:

Sulphur dioxide or other preservatives

Chemicals, cereals or other ingredients

Histamine, a product of fermentation or brewing

In some cases, reactions can be caused by an allergy to a grain of corn, wheat or rye or any other substances in alcoholic beverages.

Rarely, the pain of alcohol is a sign of a more serious underlying, such as Hodgkin's lymphoma (Hodgkin's disease).
