Wheat Allergy Overview

Wheat allergy is an allergic reaction to foods containing wheat. It is one of the most common food allergies in children. Wheat can be found in many foods, including some you might never suspect, such as bread, cakes, breakfast cereals, pasta, biscuits, beer, soy sauce and spices, such as ketchup .

Avoiding wheat is the primary treatment for wheat allergy. Medication may be necessary to treat allergic reactions when accidentally eat wheat.

Wheat allergy can sometimes be confused with celiac disease, but these conditions are different. Wheat Allergy produces allergy-causing proteins found in wheat alone. But a protein in wheat - gluten - causing an abnormal reaction of the immune system in the small intestines of people with celiac disease.
