If you know you are allergic to shellfish, the only sure way to avoid an allergic reaction is to avoid all shellfish or products that may contain shellfish. Even trace amounts of shellfish can cause a severe reaction in some people. Shellfish is not usually a hidden food ingredient, so it may be easier to avoid some other food allergens.
Avoid shellfish
Be careful when eating out. Eating out poses the greatest danger of mistake of eating seafood. When eating out, always make sure that the same pan, oil or utensils used for shellfish are not also used for other foods. This is called cross contamination.
Pay particular attention to seafood restaurants. Fish and shellfish are biologically distinct, so that the fish does not cause allergic reactions, if you have an allergy shellfish - even if you are allergic to fish. But after eating a seafood restaurant, has a higher risk of contamination of food with small amounts of seafood. Some people also have allergic reactions to the fumes of cooking.
Read labels. Cross-contamination can occur in locations where food can be processed or displayed with shells. It can also occur during manufacture. Remember to read food labels carefully. Companies are required to clearly label products containing even small amounts of seafood or other foods that often cause allergic reactions.
Keep your distance. You may have to completely avoid environments where shellfish are prepared or processed. Some people even have a reaction after touching shellfish or inhaling steam from cooking shellfish.
Some people mistakenly believe that allergy to iodine or allergy to the dye used in certain radiological laboratory procedures can cause reactions in people allergic to shellfish. Reactions to radiocontrast material or iodine are not related.
Glucosamine, a supplement used to prevent and treat arthritis, is made from crab shells, lobster or shrimp. Although it does not seem to cause an allergic reaction in most people with shellfish allergy, more studies should be conducted to determine if it is safe for people allergic to shellfish.
If you run the risk of a serious allergic reaction, talk with your doctor to carry an emergency epinephrine (adrenaline). If you have had a severe reaction, wear medical alert bracelet or necklace that lets others know that you have a food allergy.

Prevention Of Shellfish Allergy
Treatment Of Shellfish Allergy
The only sure way to prevent an allergic reaction to shellfish and shellfish is to avoid completely. Most people with an allergy can eat shell fish, however.
Even if your best, but you can still get in touch with seafood. If you experience mild allergic reactions to shellfish, medications such as antihistamines, may reduce symptoms such as rashes and itching. Antihistamines can be after exposure to shellfish to control the reaction and relieve the pain.
If you have a severe allergic reaction to shellfish (anaphylaxis), you will probably need an emergency injection of epinephrine (adrenaline). If you are at risk of severe reactions, carry injectable epinephrine (such as an EpiPen, EpiPen) with you at all times.
Spread in an injection of adrenaline emergency if you experience these symptoms after exposure to seafood:
Difficulty breathing
Swollen throat
Wheezing or dry cough repetitive
Chest tightness
Dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling that you will fail
When you use the adrenaline, contact your doctor.

The lips, face, tongue and throat or other parts of the body
Dyspnea, nasal congestion or difficulty breathing;
Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting
Dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting
Tingling in the mouth
A serious allergic reaction to shellfish called anaphylaxis can be fatal if it interferes with breathing. Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency that requires treatment with epinephrine (adrenaline) injection and a trip to the emergency room. Signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis include:
A swollen throat or a lump in the throat (airway), it is difficult for you to breathe
Collision with a sharp drop in blood pressure
Rapid pulse
Dizziness, lightheadedness or loss of consciousness
Although they have similar symptoms, shellfish allergy is different from the harmful effects of toxins or bacteria in food. Unlike allergies, food poisoning is not directly related to the immune system and only occurs when you eat food that is contaminated. An allergic reaction to shellfish usually occurs every type of fish to eat, which causes a reaction.
When to seek medical advice
Contact your doctor or allergy specialist if you have a food allergy symptoms shortly after eating. Consult a doctor if you develop signs or symptoms of anaphylaxis.
Causes Of Shellfish Allergy
All food allergies are caused by an immune system problem. The immune system recognizes certain shellfish proteins as harmful, triggering the production of a protein molluscs (allergen). The next time you touch the proteins in shellfish, these antibodies recognize them and signal the immune system to release histamine and other chemicals that cause allergy symptoms.
Chemicals and other agencies of the histamine that causes a series of signs and symptoms of allergy. Histamine is partly responsible for most allergic responses, including runny nose, itchy eyes, dry throat, rashes and hives, nausea, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, and in some cases, anaphylactic shock.
There are different types of seafood, and each type contains different allergenic proteins.
Crustaceans include crabs, lobsters, crayfish, prawns and shrimp.
Mollusks are:
Shellfish such as mussels, clams, oysters and scallops
Gastropods such as limpets, periwinkles, sea snails (snails) and abalone
Cephalopods such as squid, cuttlefish and octopus
Some people are allergic to one type of shellfish, but can eat others. However, some people with shellfish allergy avoid all shellfish.

Shellfish Allergy Overview
Allergy to shellfish cause an allergic reaction to eating seafood. Sometimes an allergy to shellfish is only certain types of seafood, or you may have an allergy to shellfish. The mollusks are marine animals with shells, such as shrimp, crab and lobster, octopus and squid.
Allergies to shellfish can cause mild symptoms such as hives or nasal congestion, or more severe symptoms or death. For some people, even a small amount of these foods can cause a serious reaction.
If you think you have an allergy to shellfish, consult your doctor. Tests can help confirm a shellfish allergy, so you can take steps to prevent future reactions.
