Egg Allergy Overview

Eggs are one of the most common food allergens, especially in children. However, most children eventually outgrow their allergies to eggs.

An egg allergy usually occur within minutes or hours after eating eggs or foods containing eggs. Signs and symptoms vary from mild to severe and may include rash, hives, vomiting, inflammation of the nasal passages. Rarely, egg allergy can cause anaphylaxis - a severe reaction, potentially fatal.

The key to preventing the egg allergy is to avoid eggs and foods containing eggs. This can be a challenge, because the eggs are common food ingredient. If a mild allergic reaction, over-the-counter antihistamines can help relieve the symptoms of egg allergy. Anaphylaxis requires a shot of adrenaline, and emergency medical treatment.
